Transaction search improvements

Some great features that would improve the search function:

  • To filter tags currently I need to open filters and select a specific tag (which are not searchable like categories). I’d like to be able to search like #mytag or tag:mytag directly on the search bar, though need to consider tags with spaces.

  • Able to filter by amount range (e.g. above 500), ideally through the search bar (like typing “>500”

  • Filter out or exclude a categories/tags from search

  • Bonus: make the search bar smart like you did with the “plus” button on the transaction page. E.g search “groceries in March over 30$” enables filters category:groceries, time range: March 1-31 (current year), amount > 30

Shipped the typed shortcuts you described:

    • #travel or tag:travel keeps rows with that tag (quote a tag with spaces: #"gas money")
    • -#travel leaves them out
    • >500, <50, >=100 <=200 narrow by amount, sign ignored

They combine with each other and with words, so "#travel hotel >100" works. The natural-language part ("groceries in March over $30") is not in this one, that is a bigger build and I’ve added that to our product roadmap.

Thank you so much! It works very well. Looking forward to the natural language search.

However this feature seems hard to discover if you’re not familiar with it, maybe a help button nearby explaining the search syntax could help.

Also it is still not possible to filter out categories.

And for range filtering, do you think it would make sense to also add sliders when opening the “Sort and Filter” full menu?

Hey @LatitudeBusily250. I thought I’d spend some more time today on this.

Natural-language search is live! Type it the way you'd say it, and the chips under the box show what it understood. Tap × on any of them to drop it.

        • groceries in March over 30$ (your example, word for word)
        • not groceries, except costco, not uber or lyft
        • coffee last month, since june, last 3 months
        • under 20 bucks, between 20 and 50

That covers filtering out categories too. The ? at the end of the search box shows a few examples. Search looks at the month you're viewing, and the All Time chip under the box widens it to every month. #tags and >500 still work.

On sliders, I went with words instead. Hated adding a new option or button for it since it would clutter desktop a lot(it already is, maybe another thing for me to look at). A slider has to stretch to your biggest transaction, so a few large ones squash the $0 to $200 range where most spending sits, and it's fiddly to set exactly on a phone. "over 500" or "between 20 and 50" gets you there faster.

What do you think, is this better and probably helps you and everyone? I didn’t like what we had done yesterday, it felt like for the average user it would be too complicated.

Yay! Looks much better, love the help with the “?” and clickable suggestions. You’re right the previous change worked but would be harder to use than now.

I tested many cases it works very well, very powerful for example I can search “canada not air” to find all payee that mention canada but exclude air canada.

I just have a few notes on the new change:

          • The help button “what can I search for” should also mentions it can search notes

          • Unable to search date, if I search “after Sep 26” it will directly me to September, over, under, or equal 26$. Would you want to support that?

          • When the search bar is empty, there is no spent/received/net, when clicking months arrows it also doesn’t show. Is this intended?

          • When typing a category or tag it creates a pill as if I’m filtering the category or tag, but it’s actually a full text search. E.g: searching “Travel” will create a “Travel” pill as if I filter the category, but it also matches full text searches for payee like “travel credit” which is an income category for me. I’d say it works as intended just the visual is misleading

          • Filtering categories via the “Sort and Filter” menu and searching full text shows 2 pills, which is fine but I feel like they should be different color when it’s a full text search vs category specific filter (maybe use the category or tag color!)

Thanks @LatitudeBusily250, these were all good catches and most of them are in the next update.

            • The "?" now says notes and dates are searchable.
            • Dates work by day now: "after Sep 26", "since Sep 26", "before Sep 26", "on Sep 26", and "from Sep 26 to Oct 3".
            • Typing a category name like "Travel" now shows as a text search chip, since it matches the word anywhere, and you get an "Only Travel category" pill when you want just the category.
            • Category and tag chips from Sort and Filters now carry their own colour, so you can tell them apart from search chips at a glance.

The spent/received/net line is on purpose: it shows totals for whatever you narrow to, and the month's own totals live on Budget and the Dashboard. Happy to revisit if it keeps bugging you/others.

            Cheers,

            Jamal
