Safe to spend

Hello!

I really like the new Safe to Spend feature, but I noticed that it currently subtracts upcoming scheduled expenses without accounting for money allocated to variable budgets.

For example, if I budget $230/week for groceries, Waypoint correctly tracks that amount under Variable Expenses. However, Safe to Spend still considers that money fully available to spend.

Ideally, Safe to Spend could account for the remaining variable budget needed until the next payday (or provide an option to include variable budgets in the calculation).

Example:

Available balance: $451
Upcoming scheduled expenses: −$15
Groceries needed until next payday: −$230
Safe to Spend: $206

Currently, it shows approximately $436, because only the scheduled expense is deducted.

This would make Safe to Spend much more useful for everyday budgeting, especially for variable expenses such as groceries, gas, dining out, etc.

Thanks!

    Hi @CasseDePouelle,

This is live now. Safe to Spend holds back what is left of your weekly and bi-weekly spending budgets until payday, on top of your upcoming expenses. Using your example, a $230 weekly grocery budget with nothing spent yet is held in full, so the number reads $230 lower than it did before. The budget does not need a date to be held, and the amount held shrinks as grocery purchases post from your chequing account. Purchases on a credit card do not lower the hold, since that cash has not left the account yet.

Monthly budgets are not held. A monthly budget is what this number funds, and Budget Pace tracks how much of it is left. If you want a budget held before payday, set it to weekly or bi-weekly.

Two other things from your feedback are in as well: a paycheque that lands early is recognised, and you can skip, move or change the amount of any single payday from the Calendar.
