Assigning a transaction to the next month?

I am very new to Waypoint, but slowly learning everything. I am wanting to assign a transaction to the next month, but can’t seem to figure out how? Is there something I’m missing? If not, can I ask for this feature to be added? I am using the free version, so manually enter all my transactions.

Reasons?

  1. When I get a utility bill, I like to go into my bank and post-date to pay the bill a week before it is due. Then I go into my budget and do the same thing, so I can complete the process and file away the bill. This often happens in one month to be paid in the next month.

  2. My paycheck goes into my account a couple days before the 1st of the month, so I have always assigned any transactions that happen in those couple days to the next month as that is when my new month starts.

Sorry if this is already an option that I just haven’t figured out how to use.

Thanks,

Cheryl

    Hi Cheryl,

Welcome to Waypoint, and thanks for taking the time to write this up so clearly.

You can already do this. The date on a transaction is what decides which month it counts in, so to assign a transaction to next month, just give it a date in that month.

    For both of your examples:

    1. For a payment you set up this month that goes out next month, enter it with the date the money will leave your account. It will show up in next month's budget, and you can file the paperwork away right after, same as you do now.

    2. For your paycheck that lands a couple of days before the 1st, date it on the 1st. It will count as next month's income, which matches how you think about your months starting.

And if you ever want to move an existing transaction, open it and edit the date. That works too.

One honest limitation: the date you enter is also the date shown on the transaction, so there is no separate "record date" and "budget month" on a single transaction today. From your description it sounds like dating entries the way you think about them will feel natural, but if you find yourself missing that separation, let us know here and we will keep this request open for it.

Thank you for your responses. And yes, I had discovered that if I just post-date my transaction, it will actually show up in the next months budget. I just need to remember to post-date it and all should be good!
